Publiée le : 25 July 2006
According to the 2006 Report of the Health Consumer Powerhouse, the French health care system ranks first among those of the 25 EU Member States.
Health Consumer Powerhouse (HCP) is an independent organisation based in Brussels, devoted to promoting transparency in the area of health care systems. To that end it has developed the Euro Health Consumer Index which rates the quality of the health care systems of the 25 EU Member States and Switzerland according to 27 indicators. In the 2006 study, published in July, France came first in the index, with 576 out of a maximum 750 points. Close behind were the Netherlands (which came first in the 2005 Index), Germany, Sweden and Switzerland, with Latvia, Ireland and Lithuania bringing up the rear. According to the summary of the report (which adopts the consumer viewpoint), France has a "technically efficient and generously providing healthcare system". It has the lowest waiting times for treatment, together with Belgium, Germany and Luxemburg. The report also looks at cost, with Slovenia and Estonia ranking highest in the “value for money” category.
