Official figures published in July 2006, put French health care expenditure at 11.14% of GDP.
The figure of €190.5 billion covers 2005 health spending by the different health care funders, namely the social security organisations, the state, the complementary health insurance providers, (mutuelles, private insurance companies and providential institutions), patients and local authorities.
This figure represents a per capita health expenditure of €3,038 and 11.14% of GDP, as compared to 11.07% in 2004. 2005 saw a slight shift in the respective inputs of the different funders, with the share of health expenditure borne by patients rising from 8.47% to 8.74%. This development can be explained by the health insurance reform and notably the introduction of a non-reimbursable charge of one euro for every medical consultation.
In terms of the breakdown of expenditure, health care and medical goods (i.e. hospital care, medical and dental care, drugs and ambulance services) alone account for €150.6 billion of all health sector spending, i.e. 8.81% of GDP as compared to 8.74% in 2004.
